A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder of his children’s mother, Audora Williams, who was shot more than twenty times in July 2022. Wonell Jones, Jr. of Washington, D.C., was convicted of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

The incident occurred on July 19, 2022, when Jones returned to Williams’ apartment after a grocery run with one of her young sons. Surveillance footage showed him entering the building and the apartment, where eight children were present, including three of his own. Despite a temporary protective order against him, which had a trial scheduled just days later, Jones confronted Williams in her bedroom, leading to a loud argument. The situation escalated quickly, and gunfire erupted, resulting in Williams’ death.

Jones fled the scene immediately after the shooting, leaving the children behind. He was arrested in Florida on August 29, 2022, and later extradited to Washington, D.C., in October of the same year. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro remarked on the severity of the violence, emphasizing that Jones’ actions were both staggering and senseless.

Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department joined in commending the investigative efforts that led to this conviction. The case was prosecuted by Zach Horton and Shaniqua Butler, who played key roles in securing the conviction against Jones.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is celebrating the 16th anniversary of its goDCgo program, which focuses on promoting sustainable transportation options in the city. The initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce pressure on infrastructure, and improve air quality by encouraging residents, workers, and visitors to consider alternative travel methods.

Since its inception, goDCgo has provided valuable resources and consulting services, helping over 41,000 individuals each year make more informed travel choices. According to DDOT, the program has led to significant reductions in vehicle use, including 827,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled daily and a decrease of 45,000 vehicles on the roads. Additionally, it has contributed to a reduction of 597,000 pounds of pollution generated each day.

“Transportation choices shape how people connect with their jobs, their communities, and the opportunities around them,” said DDOT Director Sharon Kershbaum. The department highlights that goDCgo has empowered individuals to explore smarter travel options that align with their needs.

In honor of its Sweet 16 milestone, goDCgo is hosting Capital Bikeshare raffles and offering transit-themed giveaways on social media platforms. The program continues to adapt to the evolving transportation landscape of the city, aiming to further enhance access to sustainable travel options for all residents.

(Washington, DC) – As Halloween approaches, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging families in the District to participate in free, family-friendly Halloween events planned across all eight wards. The Mayor’s office is also urging community members to collaborate in ensuring the safety of children and teens during the Halloween season, particularly on October 31, when many will be out trick-or-treating.

The DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) highlighted that various District agencies, including the Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Library, and the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, are organizing free events. Additionally, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice will deploy Halloween Safety Go Teams on October 31 from 6 PM to 1 AM across 15 locations in the District. These teams, composed of non-law enforcement individuals, aim to engage with families and monitor situations to help de-escalate any potential issues.

To enhance safety on Halloween weekend, MPD has provided several tips for drivers. They urge motorists to remain vigilant for trick-or-treaters, especially after dark, and to slow down to reduce risks. Drivers are reminded to avoid distractions such as mobile phones and not to drive under the influence. Instead, they should consider using public transportation or rideshare services.

For families participating in trick-or-treating, MPD recommends that children travel in small groups accompanied by parents or trusted adults. They should wear bright, reflective, and flame-retardant clothing, and only cross streets at designated corners or crosswalks. Children are advised to stay on well-lit streets and avoid entering homes. Parents should inspect treats before consumption to ensure their safety.

Residents are encouraged to report any immediate threats or emergencies they encounter during Halloween activities. By staying alert and working together, the community can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.

The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is currently investigating a fatal traffic incident that occurred on Interstate 295 in Southeast Washington, D.C. on October 26, 2026. The crash involved a single vehicle and took place around 12:35 p.m., just prior to Exit 2.

According to police reports, Seventh District officers responded to the scene and discovered a Toyota 4Runner in an embankment. The vehicle’s operator was found unconscious and not breathing, having sustained severe injuries from the crash. Despite the efforts of DC Fire and EMS, the operator was pronounced dead at the scene due to the absence of signs consistent with life.

Initial investigations indicate that the vehicle was traveling at an accelerated speed when the operator lost control, striking a guardrail. This collision caused the vehicle to launch into a wooded area, where it ultimately came to rest against a tree. There were no other vehicles involved in the incident, and the operator was the only occupant of the vehicle.

The deceased has been identified as 76-year-old Baldwin Rudolph Robertson, a resident of Northeast D.C. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the police at (202) 727-9099 or to send a text tip to the Department’s text tip line at 50411.
