The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating a tragic pedestrian fatality that occurred in Northwest Washington, DC on Sunday evening. The incident took place at approximately 6:48 p.m. at the intersection of North Capitol Street and New York Avenue.
According to MPD’s Major Crash Investigations Unit, officers from the Third District responded to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, they found a 29-year-old woman, identified as Shanell Holiday of Southeast DC, suffering from severe injuries. Despite the prompt response of DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Holiday was crossing in the west crosswalk when the traffic light changed to green for vehicles traveling westbound on New York Avenue. As she was in the middle of the intersection, a blue 2011 Subaru Legacy struck her and fled the scene. MPD is urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
