Mayor Bowser to Break Ground on the New Upshur Recreation Center in Ward 4

On November 2 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for the modernization of the Upshur Recreation Center in Ward 4. The project, which is estimated to cost $19 million, aims to expand the facility from nearly 6,500 square feet to approximately 9,500 square feet. Enhancements will include an expanded pool house, a renovated pool and splash pad, a new indoor half gym and fitness center, a multi-purpose room, a technology area, and an outdoor basketball court.

The renovation will not only provide more space for recreational activities but also improve outdoor areas for community events and enhance accessibility from the street level and walking paths. This initiative is part of a broader investment strategy by the Office of the Mayor of Washington, DC, which has allocated over $640 million towards recreation centers across the city since 2015. Ward 4 has received approximately $44 million of this investment, with an additional $27 million planned for future projects.

The groundbreaking ceremony will also feature remarks from Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George, Delano Hunter, Director of the Department of General Services, Thennie Freeman, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, and Camsie McAdams, Commissioner of ANC 4E05. The event will take place at the Upshur Recreation Center, located at 4300 Arkansas Ave NW, with nearby bus routes D5X, D50, and D60, as well as a bikeshare station at 14th and Upshur St NW.

Members of the press interested in attending the event are encouraged to RSVP via email. Additionally, the ceremony will be live-streamed by the DC Office of Cable Television, Film, Music, and Entertainment, with viewers able to watch on various platforms including Channel 16 (DCN) and Mayor Bowser’s social media channels.
